    REI – Campmor – Goodwill – Salvation Army – eBay –
Piecemeal (different places for each item you are looking for)

    What are you looking for?
    Basic Camping?
    Backpacking?
    Lightweight?
    Bicycling?
    Tents?
    Sleeping gear?
    Clothing?
    Cookware?

The site below has some articles on selection of some items.

    Oak

Some companies that come to mind are Camp-Mor and REI. You can Google them. Years ago Eddie Bauer sold outdoor equipment. L.L. Bean does as well, but you have to order a specialty catalog from them. You can also try Wal-Mart, Target, a military surplus store, amongst other places to look. There may even be specialty independent stores in your area. Such store have tiop-of-the-line equipment, but you usually have to have a rather fat billfold to afford most of what they sell.

I camp out all the time and I buy everything I need At Wal_Mart.
I noticed all the answers you received to your question.
However walmart has it all and you can’t beat the price.

REI: high end things (expensive), great return policy
Walmart: not so high end (cheaper), gets the job done for less

Not one place, first decide what you want then get the best of what you have decided, don’t rely on just one store. Good luck

REI, Campmore, Cabela’s for gear that matters (i.e. tent, winter sleeping bags, backpacks, rain gear)

Walmart, Target for gear that doesn’t matter (i.e. coleman stove, camp chairs, stuff sacks, lanterns, firestarters, marshmallow sticks, dishes)

If it keeps you dry or comfortable pay the extra money for great gear. If its not expensive to replace or it doesn’t matter if it stops working go with the cheapest you can find.

The exception would be if you camp where/when there is no chance of rain then you could go with a cheap tent from Walmart which will resemble a sieve if it does rain. In New England you can tell the Walmart tents by the blue tarp thrown over them in case of rain at night.

The other exception would be if you’ve never camped before and don’t know if you will like it. Then just buy a Walmart tent and air mattress. Use your home blankets and pillows. Borrow a stove and camp for the weekend. If you do like it then upgrade.
