What equipment do we really need to go camping?

By , August 13, 2010 5:01 am

My husband, son (8 months) and I are going camping later this month, for three days. We have a tent, a canopy, an air-mattress, a lamp, sleeping bags and we’re going to buy one of those camping stoves. For our son, we have his pack-n-play. What else should we buy? It’s our first real outdoor tent-camping experience.

I’m going to advise you bring a first aid kit, lots of flashlights, warm clothes and that you have some way of keeping your child contained within a certain area. At 8 months he probably can crawl. All you need is to be wrestling with the tent and then, "Honey, wheres Johnny?" Be very prepared and safety oriented. Have fun!

That pretty well covers it. I assume that you are going car-camping, so you don’t have to carry stuff any great distance. You will need some pots for the stove, dishes and eating utensils, and toilet paper, as well as appropriate food and drink.

Get those cheap fold-up chairs that come in a bag. A gas lantern, flashlight, insect repellant, and matches. And most important, toilet paper. 2 coolers. 1 for long term storage of food and another that you get into fairly often for beverages etc. If you can, bring your own firewood for a campfire. Have fun!!

ed201283 is right, those chairs will save your back. My only advise is Ziploc bags. Bring a box of gallon size ones, they are great for storing things that could leak, and for putting wet stuff in for the trip home. Put your toilet paper in one and it will stay clean and dry. Nothing yuckier than damp t.p. with pine needles stuck to it.

I would try to take along one of those play pens with the mesh sides for the baby. Don’t let the baby get too much sun. Keep warm at night.

I agree about the chairs and the zip-lock bags. Don’t forget a deck of cards, and a book or two. And towels, I forgot towels once and it was the worst mistake I’ve made. Try to get a air pump that plugs into your car for the air mattress. Take a pot big enough to heat water in to wash up with.(dishes etc.) Have fun and enjoy!
