We can all do this by being conscious of our impact as we camp and how we can reduce that impact to create a more green and sustainable camping trip.

Reconsider the RV

RVs use an incredible amount of energy and fuel to run. For your next camping trip, consider packing up the car with a tent and sleeping bags. Big tents are cheaper and a lot more earth-friendly. It is such an impressive innovation. Mobile phones are among the things most people cannot live without. Then, you’re on to an exciting camping spree.

Aside from that, one of the other innovations made was the lantern’s being a mosquito repellent as well. This may already be familiar to some people. Some technologies use UV lamp. Backpacks are generally categorized into three: frameless, external frame, and internal frame. The main purpose of a frame is to support the backpack and helps to distribute the weight across your whole body, mainly on the hips so that your shoulders are not bearing all the burden.

Frameless Backpacks

This is the simplest and most inexpensive type of backpack you can find. The most basic design consist of one main pocket and connected to a set of shoulder straps. They are more used for general stuff rather than hiking. However, some are suitable for outdoor activities like hiking. Some more advanced versions have a suspension system like waist strap, chest strap and padded shoulders.

External Frame Backpacks

This is an old favorite with backpackers because of its large capacity and strong frame. The frame is very rigid and it supports a sack made of cloth or other materials.

External frames allow for users to carry a heavier weight than a frameless pack could. It also gives the wearer more support and protection and better weight distribution. The frames have been made of wood until about the middle of the twentieth century.

This type of backpack is not very common today and the frames are now made of lightweight metal tubes, often aluminum and sometimes titanium or scandium. A system of straps and pads keep the sack and frame from contacting the body so you get reduced sweatiness.

It is normal practice to strap bulky items such as camping tents, sleeping bags and pads on the frame because some parts of the frame are not occupied by the pack. The main compartment is usually small compared to internal frame backpacks to allow for these bulky items to be strapped.

The problem with external frame backpacks is the center of gravity is very high up and away from the body resulting in instability. Keeping your balance especially when climbing up hills is not an easy task with external frame backpacks.

Users also complain of getting bruises as a result of the uncushioned frame rubbing or hitting against the body. However, external frame backpacks are very durable.

Internal Frame Backpacks

Invented in 1967 by Greg Lowe, the internal frame backpack has replaced external frame backpacks as the standard pack for hikers. Greg Lowe later went on to found Lowepro, a company specializing in backpacks and other carrying solutions for various equipment.

The frame which consists of strips of metal or plastic is integrated into the pack. A system of straps works with the frame to distribute the weight.

An internal frame backpack is fitted closely to the body and therefore the load is more easily controlled and easily predictable. You have more freedom of movement and are ideal for scrambling over rocky surfaces and hiking uphill. However, the close fit presents another problem; poor ventilation and therefore sweatier backs.

Unlike external frame backpacks, there are only a few (if any) lash points for your tent or sleeping bag and there is a limit to the size of whatever you want strapped to the outside of the pack. Fortunately, modern internal frame backpacks have a large capacity so that all of your gear can fit inside.

The first trekking trip that I went on was a DISASTER!! My girlfriend and I decided to go for a 1 week hiking ‘expedition’ in the Lake District in the UK. So I went out and bought the cheapest tent that I could find. Bear in mind that this was 10 years ago. The tent was quite heavy but I thought, ok, lets give it a try. So we started out and had a great day. That night we decided to pitch the tent at a beautiful spot. This didn’t take too long and I was really pleased with my choice. Thats when the problems started.

My girlfriend and I are not the smallest people and so when I bought a ’2 man’ tent I had presumed that this would allow two people to sleep in it. Also the tent only had one sheet between us and the elements. I quickly found out that these two things were a BIG mistake. I spent the night on my side as there was not enough room for us to both sleep on our backs, this coupled with the fact that was touching the side of the tent, meant that not only was I soaking in the morning but I had a terrible nights sleep.

This resulted in me getting the flu (or man flu as my girlfriend says) and after trying to battle through the next day I decided to give up and go home.

The moral or the story? Buying the wrong tent can be disastrous for your trip.

I have put together this information below to help you avoid situations like the one above.

1.

First consider your budget. It is all well and good looking at expensive, amazing tents but if a cheap and serviceable tent will suit your needs it is probably better to choose one of those.
2.

How many people will need to fit inside the tent, this will be described by the number of ‘men’ it will hold.
3.

Consider the colour of the tent, darker fabrics will heat up to a higher temperature and also be darker internally than lighter coloured ones.
4.

When you look for a tent it will notify you of the season or environment it is intended for. I would suggest looking at this carefully with respect to your needs prior to purchase.
5.

The tent must be light enough to not be a burden whilst traveling but at the same time be robust enough to stand up to the elements.

Types of tent

Next you have to consider the type of tent that you require:
A-frame

A=frame TentThe floor area is rectangular on the A-frame tent and houses two center poles to hold the tent up at each corner. This is a more ‘classic design of tent and in recent years it’s popularity has been overtaken by the dome tent listed below.

Advantages:

* Light, easy to pitch

Disadvantages:

* Little head room, walls may sag, may be single wall

Dome

Dome TentThese tents are shaped like a dome as the name suggests and have become the most popular tent for a wide range of camping exploits. They generally have a set of crossed poles in the middle and a further pole at the front to form a canopy where you can place things you have no need for inside your tent like dirty walking boots etc.

Advantages:

* Can be moved whilst erect, lots of head room, stand up well to the elements, easy to pitch

Disadvantages:

* The tent design leaves some material unsupported and so it is only suggested for use in moderate weather conditions.

Tunnel/Hoop

Tunnel Tent Usually comprised of one to two poles and utilising less fabric than other tents. Tunnel tents are low to the ground, are optimally designed for sleeping and require stakes to fully stand up.

Advantages:

* More space than the A-frame tent and only marginally heavier, capability of shedding heavy snow.

Disadvantages:

* Not as robust as some tents, no sitting up as is designed for sleeping.

Freestanding

Typically the most popular tent with backpackers, the freestanding tent is self supporting as the name suggests and is ideal for areas of sand rock or snow where staking down can be tricky.

Advantages:

* Suitable for all but the most hardcore weather conditions, easy to move in a hurry.

Disadvantages:

* Slightly more tricky to erect than dome tents, can be more pricey than other types of tent.

Pop-up

Pop Up Tent Pop-up tents are becoming more popular and take less than a second to pitch.

Advantages:

* Lightning quick to pitch, can be moved whilst pitched.

Disadvantages:

* Surprisingly difficult to put away in a hurry, generally single skinned.

Tipi (tepee or teepee) or Pyramid

tipi Tent Shaped like a a triangle, the tipi tent is based around a center pole which the tent’s material is attached to at the top and has a detachable floor.

Advantages:

* Quite light, provides adequate space, simple.

Disadvantages:

* Not good in rough weather.
