two person camping tentIf you are an avid camper you know you will need the proper camping gear for your adventure.  You probably have a good idea what kind of gear you will need. If you don’t camp very often or have never been you may need some help in this area. You can just imagine the outcome if you’re not properly prepared for a camping trip.  Your gear is the most important thing you bring with you. It can help you survive, or  come in handy when you need just the right  gadget.  It’s always a good idea to make a check list of the camping gear you will need before venturing out into the wilderness. There’s probably nothing worse than getting to your destination and realizing you’ve forgotten something.

If you have never been camping before it may be a good idea to go with someone who has experience to teach you the ropes. They can definitely help you with what you will need. The tricky thing is making sure you have what you need, but also, you don’t want a lot of stuff weighing you down. Here are a few basics for camping gear that are essential.  Shelter, a place to sleep, and eating utensils are some of the most important gear for camping.

And it needs to keep your other supplies and clothing dry.  When purchasing a tent it is a good idea to buy one that accommodates two more people than the number of people actually using the tent. For example, If only two of people are camping purchase a tent made for four people. The reason for this is if you only buy the two person tent for two people then it will be very cramped and no room for much else. You still need elbow room and a place for your other camping gear.

Here are some other tips for when purchasing a tent. Be sure it has aluminum poles because these are more durable and less apt to break or bend. Also, a rainfly is like an umbrella for your tent. Don’t buy one that just comes across the top. Be sure it comes down over the sides as well.  And the bigger it is the better it is for coverage.

camping sleeping padComfortable sleeping arrangements are always nice to have while camping.  You can purchase an air bed and lay your sleeping bag on top of it. Or, there are inflatable pads available, as well.  Don’t forget to pack your pillow and if your camping during the summer a lightweight, rectangular sleeping bag will do you just fine.  A cot may be something to consider. It’s up off the ground, but probably not as comfortable.

Of course, food is always essential when camping. Depending on what you like you may only need a small cooler for sandwiches and drinks. However, if you’re looking to cook hot dogs, steak, and hamburgers you will need a bag of charcoal and a spatula. Public campgrounds, usually, will have a grill or fire pit on site. If you want to bring along some pots and maybe a skillet you’re ready for stove-top meals. A propane stove will be necessary for this.

dutch ovenIf you’re really skilled with camp cooking bring yourself a dutch oven and use it for baking. And don’t forget cheap silverware or plastic ware to eat with. A can opener may come in useful, as well. Of course, you could  really rough it and just eat off the land.  Bring your fishing pole and eat the catch of the day, or pick some berries, but be careful of this. Do some research before going camping to see what natural foods are okay for you to eat. Some may be poisonous.

The best place to purchase your camping gear is probably a department store. You can usually find quality items for the lowest prices. If not, shop your local sporting goods store. The prices may be more expensive, but you’re more apt to be able to try out your equipment before buying. There are often tent displays on the floor to check out.  If there are lay down in them to be sure you have adequate room.  Try out their fishing poles, or sleeping bags to see how comfortable they are.  A first aid kit is always a good idea to bring with you. You never know when you made need it for scrapes and bruises, or burns. Overall, just have fun and enjoy the great outdoors.
